Foster Children Are Eligible for WIC

This month, FosterDad took our foster baby, Lil Bit, to the WIC (Women, Infants and Children) office that provides nutritional foods for children under the age of 5.  Foster children are automatically eligible for WIC.

Our foster baby’s mother was still receiving these benefits for Lil Bit even though she did not have him in her care.  We didn’t believe that this was right, so we called our state’s WIC program toll-free number to set up an appointment with the local WIC office to transfer the baby’s benefits.

The local WIC intake person stated that you MUST bring the child to the appointment, along with documentation that the child is in foster care.  FosterDad spent a long afternoon in the waiting room of the WIC office to make it through the cattle-call process with a fussy baby.  However, in the end, Lil Bit did receive EIGHT cans of formula. Since he is lactose-intolerant, his formula costs $15 a can – so it was probably worth the ordeal.

This month, I took off an afternoon from work to take the baby back to his followup WIC appointment.  As I was waiting, I counted 13 adults and 17 infants/children in a 280 square-foot waiting area. (yes, I was so bored that I calculated the square footage using the ceiling tiles) I was there 2 hours with a fussy baby. It sucked! (At one point, a worker expressed to me her frustration of the kids running around. I wanted to respond to her, my frustration of being required to bring my child.)

However, the benefits Lil Bit did receive was helpful. They took a blood sample and discovered his iron was a bit low. He is being weaned and so there is no more formula, but other foods, like bread, 3 gallons of lactose-free milk, a dozen eggs, a pound of cheese, and other nutritional foods are now on his program.

We don’t have to bring him back for another 6 months, and that will probably be the end of Lil Bit’s government handout.

Have any of you foster parents gone through this process for the little ones in your care? What are your experiences?

HELP! Open Adoption – Birth Family Contact – How Much?

CONTACT WITH THE BIRTH FAMILY – After adoption, how open would you be?

A question we never really considered when we chose to adopt through foster care.
A question posed to us yesterday.
A question we have to answer before Monday.
A question we desperately need help in answering.

Here’s the story!
Last night, we met with Lil Bit’s Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) and State case worker.  The State is seeking to terminate the parental rights of the birth mother due to a mental capacity issue.  On Monday, the State will be meeting with the birth mother to discuss her options of State termination versus her voluntary relinquishment.

In this meeting, the State wants to present to the birth mother as part of a voluntary reliquishment, the option of a semi-open adoption.  The State also want to present continued contact to Lil Bit’s great-aunt.

Steve and I have come up with this first laundry list of birth family contacts –
How could each of these individual contacts in this list affect Lil Bit’s future in our family?

  • Occasional daytime phone communication
  • Letter correspondence
  • Electronic communication
  • Photosharing website (Shutterfly) or other photo exchange
  • Invitations to birthday parties or birthday visit
  • Christmas time visit
  • Extracurricular activities/performances
  • Attending cultural or family events/celebrations with biological family

Please, please, please let us know your experiences with birth family contact/communication!

Thanks for all your support and prayers during this process. Hopefully, the end is in sight!

Hugs!

ONE YEAR AGO TODAY!

“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.”
~Colossians 4:2

Today I am thankful for my incredible husband, FosterDad, on the second anniversary of his 49th birthday!  Happy birthday, sweetheart!  You are my one and only!

But, also, I am thankful that one year ago today we adopted our Stinkpot!

For all you Math people – Yep!
We adopted Stinkpot on my husband’s 50th birthday!  YIKES!

That was one of the most incredible days of my 44-year-old life!

WHEN WE MET…

Who doesn’t love a good romance story?  Well, here’s the beginning of mine…

In Spring 1979, a new minister was hired for our small rural Baptist church. In May, his oldest son arrived from college. He mesmerized all us girls with his thick dark hair parted down the middle, dark mustache (ala Burt Reynolds) and blue eyes that could pierce a young girl’s heart. He was a FOX!

However, at 19 years old and in college, he was WAY too old for this pre-pubescent 14-year-old girl.

BUT…

He had a younger brother!!!
(He was finishing out his senior year of high school before he joined the rest of his family.)

I (along with a number of young ladies) anxiously
awaited the arrival of the younger brother…
And then his brother showed up —
with all his goofiness…
Uh, nevermind!

However, that July, two of our lives were about to change…

To be continued….

Come back to hear — (in Paul Harvey voice) the rest of the story!!!

Y’all have a great week enjoying your loved ones!

Worship and Praise Sunday – Live Out Loud

Today is Sunday: a day to worship and praise Him! I’m joining Infertile Myrtle today, who like me, deals with infertility and moving on…

Although we adopted Stinkpot a year ago next Thursday, I still deal with a sense of loss from our inability to conceive; however, with 2 little ones – I’m too busy to think about it much…

Stinkpot’s adoption has been such a blessing in my life! One of my “formerly single” friends in Houston just adopted a beautiful little Korean baby this week! Because of cost, we never really considered international adoption; however, Steven Curtis Chapman has created Show Hope to aid families with the cost of international adoption.

Here is his song, “Live Out Loud” – the first song of his that made me a fan of SCC! Enjoy!

Imagine this…I get a phone call from Regis
He says, “Do you want to be a millionaire?”
They put me on the show and I win with two lifelines to spare
Now picture this…I act like nothing ever happened
And bury all the money in a coffee can
Well, I’ve been given more than Regis ever gave away
I was a dead man who was called to come out of my grave
And I think it’s time for makin’ some noise

Wake the neighbors, get the word out
Come on…crank up the music…climb a mountain and shout
This is life we’ve been given made to be lived out
So la la la la live out loud
Live out loud, yeah

Think about this…try to keep a bird from singing
After it’s soared up in the sky
Give the sun a cloudless day and tell it not to shine
Now think about this…if we really have been given
The gift of a life that will never end
And if we have been filled with living hope we’re gonna overflow
And if God’s love is burning in our hearts we’re gonna glow
There’s just no way to keep it in

Everybody, come on
La la la…la la la la
La la la live out loud
I want to hear everybody sing
La la la…la la la la
La la la live out loud, loud, loud

Our 3-Day Date

After completing a critical deadline at work, my hubby and I had a 3-day date. After having 4 kids this year, we needed time together to regroup and reconnect. We traveled to Houston, where I lived as a single girl for 15 years.
We stayed at the extravagant Hotel Icon and had a butler prepare our bath!

We toured downtown on foot, ate at Brennan’s, ate at Cheesecake Factory, and gained 8 pounds each!

We took in an Astros game at Minute Maid Park! (ASTROS WON!! YEAH!!!)

Unbeknown to us, we saw Lance Berkman play as an Astro for the last time! sniff sniff

The end of the Killer B era! sniff sniff

Now back to our crazy, everyday family life!

FUNNY FRIDAY – Parenting Failures

Our case worker sent us a series of pictures of parenting failures.
She stated,”Some people just aren’t meant to be parents. Don’t let me see you doing this!”

Have you ever seen parents allowing their kids to play in dangerous places like this???

I remember my cousin, Mark, riding a skateboard down the sidewalk of an underpass of a busy street. He thought it would be fun, until he got going too fast. With cars speeding past him on the street, he didn’t have anywhere to jump off. (our parents didn’t know)…

Have a great weekend enjoying your family!
Hugs to y’all!
