The week before our Disney Cruise last fall, we discovered that Disney Cruise Lines hosts a Pirates in the Caribbean night. Not only does the cruise staff dress in pirate costumes, but everyone does!!! That sent us scrambling at the last minute for pirate costume ideas.

Travel Tips We Learned on Our Family Cruise

Disney-cruise-tips-vacation-activitiesWe needed a vacation! And then something magical happened! Disney Cruise Lines announced cruises out of Galveston! We quickly booked a week-long Caribbean cruise with Mickey, Minnie, Donald and the rest of the Disney gang.  I highly recommend Disney Cruise Lines! It was the best!!!

Here are a list of tips we learned when cruising with our children:

Buy Travel Insurance

You never know when your child may get sick, break an arm, etc.

Upgrade Your Room at Check-In

You can get steep discounts on available rooms. We could have upgraded from an interior room to a larger room with a port hole for $200; however, being the budget travelers that we are, we chose to spend that money elsewhere, since we spent so little time in our room.

Cash Is Not Accepted at Shops On-Board

We made the mistake of bringing cash to spend on the ship for souvenirs; however, the ship’s gift shop only took our room key or credit cards for purchases.

Bring a Carry-On Bag When You Board

Think of what activities you or your kids might want to do the afternoon of boarding.  If your kids are waterbugs, like mine, bring swimsuits and pool paraphernalia in a carry-on so you don’t have to listen to your kids whine all afternoon because they want to get in the pool.

Decorate Your Stateroom Door

Since stateroom doors are made of metal, use magnets to decorate the door to your stateroom so your kids can find your room easily among the sea of doors that are identical.

Have a Plan for Sea Sickness

I cannot even read a map in the car without feeling woozy. Although, I did get “the patch” for the cruise, if you would like a more natural (and less expensive) alternative, consider taking Ginger Root capsules.  I used it considerably when my former job had me flying in a helicopter with a former Vietnam chopper pilot.

Enroll Your Children in the Ship’s Kids Club

My kids begged to spend time in the Oceaneers Club for kids. In fact, one evening, our Kindergartner didn’t asked to be picked up until nearly midnight!!

Plan for Naptime

Our 3-year-old needs an afternoon nap!  But the last thing we wanted to do was spend two hours in our interior cabin watching our child sleep.  We had an ingenious idea and took the kids to an afternoon movie at the ship’s on-board theater.  In the dark, cool theater, our exhausted preschooler fell asleep rather quickly, regardless of the theater’s surround sound system.  We enjoyed watching DisneyNature’s Chimpanzee. (you must see this movie about adoption in the wild)

Remember This Former Foster Child

In 1994, a lanky 14-year-old orphaned boy in Guatemala City, began a 2,000-mile journey for a better life.  Jose Gutierrez hopped 14 freight trains and walked to get to California. He was determined to escape his former life and make a new one in America, the land of opportunity he had heard about from a minister in a children’s shelter back in Guatemala.

With no entry papers, U.S. immigration authorities detained him.

Since the United States doesn’t deport Guatemalan minors who arrive without family, Gutierrez was made a ward of Los Angeles Juvenile Court and placed in a series of group homes and foster families. He learned English and finished high school.

In 1999, when he reached 18, he was made a permanent resident of the United States. He had wanted to go to college to become an architect and joined the Marines to make money for college (and to send to his sister in Guatemala).

At age 22, Lance Cpl. Gutierrez was a rifleman deployed to Iraq. On March 1, 2003, he wrote in a letter to his foster mother: “Pray for all of us, not just me.”

Sadly, less than three weeks later, on March 21st, he died in a firefight near Umm Qasr – by friendly fire.

He was the first U.S. soldier to die during combat in Iraq.

Gutierrez “wanted to give the United States what the United States gave to him. He came with nothing. This country gave him everything.”

This young man gave his life for our country. Lance Cpl. Jose Gutierrez is buried in his home country of Guatemala.

On this Memorial Day, remember him and others that gave the ultimate sacrifice of their lives for our freedom.

Fun Memory of Grandpa’s Dr. Seuss Food Menu

Dr. Seuss’ birthday is March 2nd and touches a special memory in my heart. Every year, I celebrate with my kids with a special edible Dr. Seuss food menu…because of my dad’s epic fail…

My Daddy was shy, rarely appearing in public. But he had a quirky sense of humor.

On a March 2 evening in my youth, I came home late from school to find my dad in the kitchen already preparing supper. (I grew up in a single-parent home with my dad and two younger sisters)

He informed me that it was a special day – a special day, indeed! It was Dr. Seuss’ birthday!  He added that since we didn’t have any Green Eggs and Ham – that he had a better Dr. Seuss food idea and would be serving another delicacy:

GREEN CHICKEN!

My sisters and I just looked at each other as he proudly placed his colorful, culinary masterpiece on the table. We tried to eat it – we did – however, we just couldn’t get past the color to eat GREEN CHICKEN!

The funniest point of the evening that made us laugh as a family even years later is –

EVEN OUR FAMILY DOG WOULDN’T EAT THE GREEN CHICKEN!

My dad passed away from brain cancer just a few years later. He never met his grandchildren (or his sons-in-law).  My children will have no memories of their Grandfather; however, I want them to feel as though they knew him. One way I’m creating a connection with their deceased grandfather is to preserve that silly memory of Dr. Seuss food on March 2nd with my children.

Over the years, Dr. Seuss’ birthday, has been commemorated by National Read Across America Day. (In fact, next week, my son will celebrate a Seussibration week at school.)

Our family has our own unique celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday – to celebrate a Grandfather.

How to Make Kids Christmas Photos Less Horrifying

I am ashamed! This is my Stinkpot’s first photo with Santa…santa-pictures-tips

Go ahead and nominate me for Bad Parent of the Year for terrorizing my kid – I nominate myself!  I’ve learned quite a bit in the last four years of parenting. Last year, we had a good experience taking family portraits and pictures with Santa.  This is how we did it…

1. Introduce your Children to Santa Claus Beforehand

In the picture above, Stinkpot had no clue who this scary guy in a red suit was.  A new parent, I simply handed my toddler over to this guy for a photo. Wrong tactic! I did a much better job at introducing Santa Claus to my Lil Bit. I pointed out Santa Claus on television, at parades, on items in stores, and at the mall beforehand. By picture day, Lil Bit wanted to tell Santa about the choo-choo he wanted.

2. Schedule an Early Appointment with Family Photography Studio

Make your appointment as early in the day as your family can manage.  Early enough that the photos are taken before naps or lunch is necessary. We had an 8:30 a.m. appointment on a Saturday. This also avoids the crowded chaotic waiting area of photography studios that happen as the day moves on.  By the time we left at 9:45 a.m., the waiting room was becoming quite full.Christmas-card-design-adoption-front copy

3. Take Family Portraits and Santa Photos on the Same Day

The kids are already dressed up.  A quick trip to the mall immediately after it opens hopefully guarantees shorter waiting lines to sit on Santa’s lap.

4. Dress for a Different Look in Kids Pictures with Santa

Remove the tie and jacket, then add a sweater vest for a different look.kids-pictures-with-Santa-Claus

5. Provide a Simple Snack

Since discovering my 5-year-old Stinkpot has meltdowns associated with low blood sugar, I try and have snacks readily available.  Snacks can help tie a child over until mealtime and be a useful incentive, especially during wait times.

6. Be Realistic about Pictures with Santa

Even at older ages, this may be your foster child’s first experience with Santa. Don’t stress out about having the smiling, happy Santa photo. It may not happen and that’s okay. Whatever photo you do get, could possibly be the ONLY photo your child‘s ever had with Santa. (I don’t have a photo of me with Santa)

What are your tips for making pictures with Santa enjoyable for your children?  Have they had pictures with Santa before?

One Thing You Shouldn’t Do at Your July 4th Fireworks Celebrations

She and I were scurrying about, screaming, and holding our heads. Her bratty brother!  I now think back at what he was doing and cringe.  He was shooting bottle rocket fireworks at us!

With the July 4th holiday this week, I had a flashback to my youth. I knew bottle rockets were dangerous, but….SPARKLERS CAUSE THE MOST INJURIES!

Happy New Year. It's going to be a great one!

My surprise…I don’t know about you, but when I was a little girl, I LOVED playing with the sparklers, the ONLY firework I enjoyed.  When I saw this infographic, I hadn’t thought about the burn hazards from the hot temperatures of a sparkler. Sparklers cause 31% of all fireworks injuries.

After researching the minimum standards for residential foster homes in Texas, I found that weapons, firearms, and explosive materials (such as fireworks) are generally permitted, however, with some specific restrictions:

If you allow explosive materials or “toys that explode or shoot“, you must develop and enforce a policy identifying specific precautions to ensure children do not have unsupervised access to them, including:

  • Locked storage made of strong, unbreakable material;
  • A determination that it is appropriate for a specific child to use the “toys that explode or shoot”; and
  • The child must be directly supervised by a qualified adult.

Our July 4th tradition generally has been to go watch the large fireworks display in a nearby city, although last year was spent in the hospital before the investigation into our foster home began.

With city ordinances, and especially the probability of grass fires, we really haven’t used fireworks in the past few years.

We discovered this grass fire in our backyard last weekend. Scary!

What is your foster care agency’s safety requirements for fireworks?  How are you celebrating July 4th in your foster home?

Do You Celebrate Your Adopted Child’s Culture?

This past weekend was Cinco de Mayo, a celebration for those of Mexican descent.  Although, now a U.S. citizen, our 2-year-old Lil Bit was born in Mexico.  During our struggle to keep Lil Bit in our family, we felt pressure from Lil Bit’s CASA worker as she kept saying over and over: “He needs his Mexican culture.”  During this ordeal, my thoughts were that we can learn and teach him Spanish, and I do cook Mexican food a couple of times a month — We are in Texas, for Pete’s sake. With a Mexican restaurant on every block, Hispanic culture surrounds us.

Mexico

However, lately I have internally stressed over learning Spanish and how to “become more Hispanic” for my Mexican child.

I recently finished “reading” Adopted for Life by Dr. Russell Moore, a leading Christian adoption advocate.  As I listened to Dr. Moore reading the audiobook to me, I was comforted by his words (paraphrased from Chapter 1):

“We will teach our boys about their cultural heritage…I will teach aspects of Russian culture but not with the same intensity….They eat what we eat…They share our lives and our story…They’re Moores now with all that that entails…”

I began to think about all the families we know with one Mexican spouse – relatives, neighbors, and long-term friends – and how they integrate Mexican culture into their families. Of those, only half actually teach their children to speak Spanish, mainly because the grandparents primarily speak Spanish.  However, most do teach a few words of Spanish, as do we.  Although, I didn’t have a Hispanic parent or take a Spanish language course, I know a bit of Spanish vocabulary I learned through Mexican friends, roommates, travel, and Sesame Street.

Would I like to learn to speak Spanish? Yes! I would love to one day be able to hold a conversation with someone in Spanish. That is something I plan to do when we eventually homeschool our children. But we will learn Spanish as a family – not only for our Mexican child, but for our entire family.

As Dr. Moore also points out in his book, parents shouldn’t point out their adopted children’s differences.  We don’t want Lil Bit to feel different in our family just because he is Hispanic, he is our son and we want to instead point out how much he is like us.

(On a side note, I met a co-worker of FosterDad’s at a local park this week – when she saw Lil Bit, she said, “He looks like your husband.” — Take that Ms. You-can-tell-by-looking-at-him-that-he’s-not-yours CASA worker!!!)

We do want our Mexican child to be proud of his first culture; however, he is now our American son, and we did not celebrate Cinco de Mayo this year. (It’s t-ball season)

What are your thoughts on keeping cultural heritage?
