My Struggle to Get My Son to Take Medicine

Earlier this week, my kindergartner woke up with a HORRIBLE hacking dry cough and no voice. I was surprised since the temperature outside is still in the 90s here in Texas.

“Cold season” generally runs from September to April!

I didn’t realize that colds begin this early in the school year, but, of course, those are the months the kids are in school spreading their germs with all the other kids.

Although my kindergartner will eat just about anything – if you say the word “medicine” – he will start whining, crying, begging, and hiding. Isn’t that weird? Giving this child medicine can become an incredible struggle! Many times, before it’s over, we’ve had to resort to putting the medicine in a syringe, holding him down, and slowly squirting it in his mouth, just to get the medicine in him!!! And then he will just spit it out if we don’t watch…. How many of you can relate to this scenario???

In a new national survey of U.S. parents of school-aged children (ages 4-13), 40% say that they find it isn’t always easy to give their children over-the-counter liquid cough and cold medicine.

Dr. Cocoa™ for Children had sent me their products to try so I thought we’d try the Dr. Cocoa™ products that are made with 10% real cocoa — maybe my son might be more willing to take this medicine if it was flavored with “CHOC-WAT” (my son’s cute way of saying “chocolate“).

Dr. Cocoa™ Long-Acting Cough Relief is so chocolate-y that my son licked it up! (because it’s that thick) He even said “Yummy!” That’s the first time that’s happened!

To be honest, I was skeptical about chocolate-flavored cough medicine, but since trying it, I have been telling my family and friends about the Dr. Cocoa™ products that really is chocolate-flavored. Now I want Dr. Cocoa™ to make a children’s pain reliever! How about it, Dr. Cocoa™?

Like the Dr. Cocoa™ Facebook page to win a Dr. Cocoa™ hand puppet.

Here is a $2.00 off coupon so you can try Dr. Cocoa™ for Children yourself. You can buy Dr. Cocoa™ for Children at these locations.

Feeling Overwhelmed? How Much Can You Handle?

Life can be overwhelming! Life with kids can be overwhelming! Life with kids from trauma can be more than overwhelming!

I believe God does give us more than we can handle. However it doesn’t stop there. He gives us more than we can handle and then gives us the strength to make it through as we surrender to Him for help.

VIDEO: The Surprise Results of My Cancer Biopsy

A few weeks ago, I underwent major surgery for ovarian cancer biopsy. Beforehand, I just didn’t comprehend just how painful my recovery would be, so I was surprised when I awoke from surgery in excruciating pain from my rib cage down to the middle of my thighs.

On top of this, due to my adverse reaction to pain medications, I had an extended hospital stay until the pain was manageable. UG!

But the biggest surprise was when I received the cancer biopsy results…

Cancer is a word, not a sentence!

My Child’s Early Hunger Still Affects Him Today

More than one in five children (including one in four Latino children) in the U.S. may not know where their next meal is coming from — nearly 16 million children experience child hunger!

child-hunger-ends-here-heb

Children who experience even intermittent struggles with child hunger may suffer serious, long-term consequences to their health, well-being and educational achievement. I know these effects first hand!

Our son experienced child hunger before being placed in foster care.

When our toddler’s tantrums morphed into rages as he got older, as parents, we felt more and more hopeless — we didn’t know what was going on in our little boy’s brain! We were frightened that our son could have serious psychological issues. However, thanks to Empowered to Connect, we began to realize that our son’s rages were associated with hunger.

Due to our son’s early neglect and experience of child hunger, his little brain had been rewired to believe:  “when I’m hungry, I might not eat, I might die” which can trigger the fear response of fight or flight. (our son is a fighter)  Once we realized our son’s fits were associated with child hunger, we have been able to help him by giving him a quick snack to reset his blood sugar. We have now reduced our strong-willed son’s fits by 95%!!!

That’s why child hunger is an important topic to me! I’m proud to be partnering with ConAgra Foods to help build a community of people to make a difference and help donate up to 7 million meals through P&G’s Child Hunger Ends Here campaign.

To learn more about how you can help end child hunger, join the Child Hunger Ends Here Facebook page or connect on Twitter or Instagram!

How do your children respond to hunger?

Disclosure: I participated in this important program on behalf of ConAgra Foods and The Motherhood, but this is my true experience of child hunger.

How I Got My Kids to Brush Their Teeth

I don’t know about you, but getting my kids to brush their teeth has ALWAYS been an intense struggle! It seems my kids’ sensory issues keeps them from wanting to brush their teeth.  Intense battles ensue! And I always seem to lose that battle – every – single – night!

kids-brushing-teeth-oralb-fb

If you follow our adventures on Facebook, last month, the dentist found a cavity on my son’s bicuspid and suggested an ugly silver cap!!! (Thanks for your advice against it)  I MUST find a way to encourage my kids to brush their teeth! Without a battle…

I was thrilled to try Oral-B’s new Disney Timer App just to see if it could motivate my kids to brush their teeth without a battle…

OralB-Disney-Magic-TimerThe app was super-easy to set up with one boy choosing to be Ironman and the other choosing to be Jake from the Neverland Pirates.

OralB-kids-brush-teethAs my kid brushes his teeth, the app shows a toothbrush slowly brushing to reveal a Disney scene that becomes a sticker in his album. And would you believe, this is all that it takes to get my kids to brush their teeth?!!!

OralB-kids-brushing-teethOralB-Disney-Timer-AlbumBut sometimes we still have a small battle – a different one: “Mom!!!! Gimme your phone so I can brush my teeth!!!” (we are working on asking politely)

Also, the app prevents hackers, like my son, from cheating — my son tried to get more stickers by brushing his teeth twice in a row — the app didn’t let him!

Do you struggle to get your kids to brush their teeth?

5 Ideas for Family Bonding Time

As one year comes to a close, I like to examine how I can make the next year even better! This year, I’d like to increase our family bonding time.  With my sons getting older and able to communicate better, our family life improved…some. However, there are still those times of chaos that cause family dissension.  So this year, we are working to improve our family bonding time so that, hopefully, the chaos will occur less often.

5 Ideas for Family Bonding Time

1. Reduce stress in our family life.

Life is stressful. Add Reactive Attachment Disorder and behavior issues to the equation, and life as a family can become a chaotic mess.  And some of this stress comes from ourselves. As parents, we tend to parent our children to our expectations. For instance, a 5-year-old should be able to sit still at a table in a restaurant.  But Dr. Karyn Purvis states that children can be a certain age chronologically, and up to 40% younger developmentally.  To reduce stress in our family, we have to be willing to adjust our expectations and embrace a “different kind of normal.” Being a “perfect parent” isn’t the goal. Our goal should be to love our children the way they need to be loved – the way God has called us to love  so that we can create a strong family bond.

2. Plan menus and make mealtime preparation a family activity.

“Study after study shows that the more often families eat together, the less likely the kids are to smoke, drink, do drugs, get depressed, develop eating disorders, become overweight, and consider suicide—and the more likely they are to eat their vegetables, know which fork to use, learn big words, do well in school, feel that their parents love them, and delay having sex. And that’s just for starters.” {from The Hour that Matters Most: The Surprising Power of the Family Meal by Les & Leslie Parrott} Eating dinner together is a priority in our family and has promoted bonding during difficult times. I believe our family time together is the reason that my adult stepson hasn’t gone off the deep end and some of his friends have.  However, meal preparation time can add immense stress to our evenings, and the kids may not like the foods we fix.  By planning and preparing meals together with the kids, I hope to add a sense of ownership to the food on the table and encourage the kids to eat better.  Another resolution for our family is to reduce soft drinks and red dye in our diet.

3. Make family devotion time a priority.

Our family devotion time before bed has just fallen by the wayside during this school year. Since we are in the lifestage of eliminating naps, many days the kids are exhausted and grumpy, and may even fall asleep right after dinner.  This year, we will be making family devotion time a part of our nightly dinner together. My favorite devotional for my young boys is the Little Boys Bible Storybook for Mothers and Sons (new edition to be released soon).  I love how the author actively tells the Bible stories to keep the attention of a young boy. For instance, the story of Noah building the ark is told from the viewpoint of Noah’s sons as boys with the lesson of obeying God even if you don’t want to.  The discussion section creates incredible family bonding time: “Remind your son of a time he obeyed and tell him how happy it made you.” I love how my sons can learn how to apply the Bible lessons in their young lives.

4. Limit screen time and encourage more creative activities.

Our family is inundated with various “screens” — television (now with nonstop kids programming), Netflix available on multiple devices, video games on the wii, Playstation, Kindle, and iPhone.  And it becomes so easy to let the kids “entertain themselves” with the technology I didn’t have as a child.  But with added screen time, my kids are losing time in imaginative play and family bonding time.  Just being together in the same room isn’t enough for family bonding if there is no interaction.

5. Schedule family game nights.

Now that our youngest can count and identify shapes and colors, he can participate in games with the family, such as this easy Go Fish game.  The fabulous book, The Whole-Brain Child, encourages families to make it point to have fun together to help children bond with others. Children seem to immediately connect with laughter. Increasing the “family fun factor” helps build relationships: “Recent studies have found that the best predictor for good sibling relationships later in life is how much fun the kids have together when they’re young. The rate of conflict can even be high, as long as there’s plenty of fun to balance it out.”

10 Stores that Don’t Celebrate Christmas

We are in an age when the world is trying to take Christ out of Christmas.

Businesses are electing to replace “Merry Christmas” with “Happy Holidays,” and even so much as to rename Christmas trees as “holiday trees.”

The American Family Association (AFA) is a nonprofit 501(c3) on the frontlines of the war on morality in America.  The mission of the AFA is to inform, equip, and activate individuals to strengthen the moral foundations of American culture. AFA believes that a culture based on biblical truth best serves the well-being of our nation and our families and in holding accountable companies that sponsor programs attacking traditional family values. AFA also believes in commending those companies that act responsibly regarding programs they support.

AFA reviewed retailers in up to four areas to determine if a company was “Christmas-friendly” in their advertising: print media (newspaper inserts), broadcast media (radio/television), website and/or personal visits to the store. If a company’s ad has references to items associated with Christmas (trees, wreaths, lights, etc.), it was considered as an attempt to reach “Christmas” shoppers.

If a company has items associated with Christmas, but did not use the word “Christmas,” then the company was considered as censoring “Christmas.”

If you believe in keeping Christ in Christmas, you have the opportunity to let your voice be heard when you do your Christmas shopping this year.

The following companies may use “Christmas” sparingly in a single or unique product description, but as a company, does not recognize Christmas.

Christ-in-Christmas-retail-stores-boycott

Five years ago, Gap, Inc. adamantly refused to use the term ‘Christmas’ in any of its seasonal advertising.  However, after an AFA-encouraged boycott last year, Gap has completely turned around its seasonal advertising this year, and will place “Merry Christmas” signs in every store, along with Christmas trees and a special “Christmas-themed event” at all Old Navy stores.

Here is AFA’s complete list of national retailers and their recognition of Christmas.

Will you join me in keeping Christ in Christmas by shopping at retailers that celebrate Christmas?

It’s Chili Season in Texas

My 21-year-old son, Bubba, works the oddest hours and eats at weird times.  And he doesn’t eat much, many times just one meal a day. At 120 pounds, his 5’10” frame needs more food.  We began buying 6-packs of Wolf Brand Chili at Sam’s Club (for only $5.98), and Bubba eats it up! He just opens a can and heats it in the microwave. Easy, Peasy! The bonus is that Wolf Brand Chili has 32 grams of protein per can for Bubba.

Wolf Brand Chili is a Texas tradition – Texas football just isn’t right for me without Frito Pie, straight out of the bag! YUM! (Disclaimer: I am a born & bred Texan  — so a Coke is a soft drink, not a particular brand and Fritos are corn chips of any brand)

And with cooler fall weather, chili is just the perfect comfort food. You can eat chili straight up – or add a variety of toppings! I like Cheddar cheese and Fritos.

What’s the Best Wireless Plan for a Young Adult?

CB-sponsored-post-gray-script-400(1)Last month, I shared our struggle to stay connected with 21-year-old Bubba when he moved from Texas to Virginia.  With his lackadaisical attitude on life, money, {and working}, my adult stepson needs a cheap wireless plan that he can afford with no long-term contract.

Walmart Family Mobile Plan offers affordable unlimited Talk, Tex & Web for only $39.88 a month!  No contract is required!  A young adult such as Bubba should be able to afford that!

cheap-wireless-plan-#shop

I purchased the T-Mobile Concord smartphone for $79.88 at Walmart Family Mobile in the Electronics department at the store.

walmart-concord-smartphone-#shopThe Concord smartphone has a touchscreen and is Wi-Fi capable with real web browsing. It only costs $25 for the activation kit, and you can either activate the phone in the store OR at home through the online account management site.cheap-wireless-plan-smartphone-#shop

After getting another $70 cell phone bill for just myself, I put pencil to paper to compare:

CURRENT PLAN

(with Contract)

WALMART FAMILY MOBILE

(no Contract)

Talk

$39.99 (450 minutes)

$39.88 *(unlimited)

Text

$5.00 (200 texts)

*Included

Data Plan (Unlimited)

$30.00

TOTAL

$74.99

$39.88

THAT’S A SAVINGS OF OVER $35 A MONTH!!! And that’s just for ONE cell phone!!! I can nearly pay for TWO cell phone plans through WalMart Family Mobile as I’m currently paying for just ONE! I am looking at changing my own cell plan over this week!!!

best-wireless-plan-#shop

The WalMart Family Mobile Plan is the best wireless plan option around, especially for young adults. Check out my photo album on Google+ to see more. Also, see how #FamilyMobileSaves other families. #cbias

Update on Bubba: His life in Virginia came abruptly to an end.  After living with friends for three months and not finding a job, he was given two days notice to move out.  He has moved back in with us and is not showing much motivation to get a job. {{sigh}} But that’s another blog post for another day….

How much do you pay for your cell phone? Have you priced other cell phone plans lately?
