GIVEAWAY: Hallmark Adoption Keepsake Ornaments

The keepsake ornaments you put on your Christmas tree can document memories for years to come. When I purchased my very first Christmas tree as an adult, I simply bought glass ornaments to make a pretty tree. But that changed one year, when I saw a flying pig ornament. I quickly purchased the ornament, and smiled inside when I placed it on my Christmas tree for the memory it brought to me.

That Christmas ornament was a flying pig. Its significance may make you smile a bit too. The back story on the flying pig isn’t about a wild ride on a Harley. You see, my college career was abruptly halted when I received a late night call that my dad was in ICU at the hospital back in Waco. The next morning, doctors gave me the horrifying news that cancer was eating away my dad’s brain and he would die within a six months. My dad died five months and three weeks later.

After a couple of years, I finally decided I was ready to go back to college. But without any support system, I was having to work more than part-time, and yet study enough to pass Biochemistry courses at Texas A&M University. Each month, I cried and worried if I could do it long enough to get that coveted college degree. 28 months later, when graduation day came, I wrote on my graduation cap “PIGS DO FLY!”

Flying pigs have become a special symbol to me that all things are possible! However, as I began adding flying pig ornaments and then other flying animals, my Christmas tree became overloaded with angel pigs, then angel sheep, then angel cows, angel dogs, and any winged animal — my friends began calling my Christmas tree “the dead animal tree.”

But once I married and became a mom through the miracle of adoption, the ornaments on our Christmas tree began to tell a different story – a magical story of hope, love and family memories.

Some of my favorite memories are told through the ornaments on our Christmas tree.

Celebrating Amazing Foster Dad of FIVE Little Ones

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #NauticaforDad #CollectiveBias

We became foster parents in 2008 and have fostered 16 kids during that time.  As parents of neglected and traumatized kids, our journey has not been easy one. In fact, we’ve had to learn our limits as parents, especially with the placements in the summer of 2012.

My husband was anxiously watching the calendar that school year. Every day that went by was one day closer to his ultimate goal in teaching — early retirement!  After teaching special education for the past decade, he was eager to relax at the end of his teaching career.

Not that life at home with our two boys was relaxing. Our 5-year-old forever son, placed with us as an 8-month-old, had been having all sorts of explosive behavior that he had been kicked out of THREE day cares.  We were struggling in parenting him, but then again, he’s only five, right? And parenting him with his 3-year-old brother, chaos is expected, right? We were living our normal with our two rambunctious preschoolers.

Suddenly, one day, I received a call asking if we would accept a placement.  The placement was a sibling group of THREE – but we only had TWO beds available in our home.  As the cloud of guilt overcame any clear thinking – I realized we only needed two beds because, get this – the baby doesn’t need a bed since she will sleep in a crib!

I immediately said “YES” because how heartless can you be to say no to a BABY, right?

foster-dad-kids-f2f

In the summer of 2012, our family looked like this: our 5-year-old forever son, 4-year-old foster son, 3-year-old forever son, nearly 2-year-old foster daughter (possibly FASD), and a 9-month-old foster baby!

While I was at my quiet desk job all day, Dad was at home with FIVE kids – 3 rambunctious, quibbling preschool boys, one very active non-verbal toddler, and a baby!

foster-dad-kids-swim-f2f

Welcome to retirement, Dad! So long to a relaxing summer enjoying retirement!

The stress of parenting five little ones all day alone was overwhelming for my husband (with a history of high blood pressure, no doubt).

Our 4-year-old foster son constantly fought with our 3-year-old son. Our 2-year-old sensory-seeking foster daughter was constantly into things and would scream at just the mention of sleep – she could only fall asleep with hard rocking motion.  And then there was the baby… That was along with our two forever sons.

But through that summer, I gained a new respect for my husband while parenting this herd of little ones. He is the anchor of our ever-changing family.

I also learned that I should discuss accepting foster care placements with my husband first.

And even years later, I’m still trying to make it up to him and like to treat him special on Father’s Day. With our recent move to the Austin area, I finally went and checked out the shopping at The Domain.

Since my special man likes to smell good, I went browsing at the Macy’s fragrance counter.

Homemade Mother’s Day Gift Idea plus FREE Printable

I Love You Beyond Measure DIY Candle Gift Idea: Child at Heart

Hey ya’ll! I’m Deonna and I write Child at Heart: A faith-based DIY, gift ideas, and family blog. I’m a stay-at-home mom, police wife, and mommy to this little cutie 🙂

IMG_2001

Had to share a picture from my Instagram with my new Foster 2 Forever friends 🙂 I was asked by Penelope to share an easy gift idea for Mother’s Day with you. I was one of Penelope’s roomies at Blog Elevated and we had SO much fun!

I LOVE making gifts for Mother’s Day and when I think of my mom, I think of how much she LOVES cooking…I didn’t get that gene 🙂 I found this great little measuring cup the other day and I decided to turn it into a fun kitchen candle. I am sharing a simple way to make a soy candle with essential oils in your microwave. It’s super easy and they turn out really pretty. I also made some simple gift tags that say “I Love You Beyond Measure” to add to your candle gift. All you have to do is print, cut, and you’re done!

Okay let’s make our candles:

You can choose any little bowl, cup, or mug to make this project if you don’t love the measuring cup idea. Just choose your bowl or cup and clean it out and dry it really well. I did the tutorial with this fun little bowl I found.

How to Make a Soy Essential Oils Candle in the Microwave: Child at Heart

1. Place your wick in the center of the bowl or cup. I used a glue dot to hold it in place. Once, the hot wax hits the glue dot it will move but it does help get you ready to pour.

2. Measure your soy wax flakes by pouring them into your cup twice. This should be enough to fill the bowl once it’s melted. I melted them in a microwave-safe bowl in the microwave for about 5 minutes. Stir to make sure it is thoroughly melted.

3. Add your essential oils of choice. I did about 20 or 30 drops and my candles don’t smell very strong so if you want a stronger scent, use more. Stir for about 2 minutes and then slowly pour into your bowl or cup.

4. Place a small piece of wax paper over the candle with a hole in it for the wick. This will keep your wick centered while the wax hardens. Allow several hours to cool.

Here are some of the other finished candles! Besides the bowl and measuring cup, I used a tiny tea cup and a coffee mug that I wrote on with a gold Sharpie. The printable gift tags for the mug and tea cup are available on my blog as well. Just click on them, print, cut, and you’re done!

FREE Printable Gift Tags: Click on the link, print, cut, and tie it on your gift with some cute ribbon or jute. I made a colorful option and also a black and white option. You could hit the black and white tags with some watercolors for a fun twist!

Protecting My Mexican Baby Against the Evil Eye

Our Baby’s Evil Eye Baby Bracelet

Five years ago, I received that life-changing call: “We have a 3-month-old baby boy that needs a home.”   He was absolutely a good and perfect gift from above! (James 1:17)

For the first time in my life, I fell in love at first sight! But there was another woman that was already in love with him.  This baby’s birthmother loved him, and she wanted him safe, even if not with her.

When Lil Bit arrived, on his tiny infant wrist was a little red bead bracelet – a “Deer’s Eye” bracelet or in Spanish “Ojo de Venado” bracelet. It had a big brown charm or “deer eye” bearing the image of Virgin Mary.  The big brown charm or “deer eye” is actually made from the dark brown seed of a plant known as Velvet Bean or Cowhage with the image of Virgin Mary and finished with a fluffy red tassel — some actually believe the charm to be an actual dried deer eye.

evil-eye-baby-bracelet-meaning

Evil Eye Meaning

The Ojo de Venado or Deer’s Eye charm is a Mexican form of magical protection against the evil eye.  The evil eye belief is that a person (not an evil person per se) — can harm you or your children by looking at them with envy and praising them without touching them.

The evil eye causes a sickness transmitted — usually without intention — by someone who is envious, jealous, or covetous.  “Mal de ojo” manifests itself as a feverish sickness that leaves a baby hot, uncomfortable and whiny.  So, when infants enter a home from outside, and are hot and cranky, the belief by many Mexicans is that someone had looked at them with a desire to touch them, and didn’t.

Egg and the Evil Eye

The ‘Mal de Ojo’ causes the baby to be hot and cranky, and the baby must be “cleaned” with an egg to take the illness away and calm them down.  The procedure it to take an egg and rub the baby’s body and head with it.  The egg is then cracked it into cup of water, and the water is then examined to ensure that the “evil” is removed.

Although our family doesn’t believe in the Mexican belief of the ‘Mal de Ojo’, we do signify its importance to the birthmother. Our Lil Bit’s Deer Eye bracelet has a special place on our Christmas tree.  That small ornament on our Christmas tree signifies a special gift from his birthmother that demonstrates her love for her baby boy and desire to protect him from harm.  Our baby is loved!

Traumatized Children Don’t Need More Toys

Traumatized Children Need Family Bonding Time

Most of us are very sensitive to the needs of foster children. We want to heal them, rescue them, offer them the best of the best because we know their lives have been too hard – too much for such young souls. But, when it comes to traumatized children, too many gifts can trigger disregulation.

family-bonding-time-gifts

When holocaust survivors were found in the concentration camp, soldiers were heart broken over what they saw. Emaciated bodies lying around, alive, breathing and looking dead. The immediate reaction was to feed them all! Lots of canned food were given by compassionate men, doing their best to help the situation. Starving people devouring every bit of nourishment, in a frenzy, propelled by desperation… It wasn’t long, however, before the side effects of this well-intended rescue took its form. The newly-fed were now suffering from indigestion and many died from it.

When a body suffers such tremendous trauma, the best help is to slowly and systematically restore nourishment. Everything is fragile and needs to be handled with care and precision. The same can be said for emotional trauma, in my opinion.

When a child has been deprived of so much, there is a form of starvation going on, an emotional starvation. The natural response from many adults is to compensate that by wanting to give, give, give.  Though giving is good, if not done correctly, it can cause a child to feel overwhelmed. It may be too much for the child to digest.

How can you give gifts that can actually be a benefit for the foster and/or traumatized children during the holidays?

Our foster son has a Christmas list from the state, from the agency, from his birth grandparents, from his foster family. I can tell you that he hardly knows what to ask, in first place. For starters, he came to us with more toys for active boys than my two birth daughters had! And, most of it lay still inside his toy box to this day. Many, he has broken. Too many toys stop meaning much to him. They become a band-aid from adults, trying to cover his deep emotional wounds.

Knowing that he can’t absorb it all, we came up with a great idea.

Great ideas to help build family bonds after adoption

GIFTS TO PROMOTE FAMILY BONDING TIME

Tickets to the movie theater
Tickets to the local family entertainment center
Tickets to sporting events
Tickets to skating rink
Zoo passes
Aquariums
Museums
Family games, such as, Go Fish, Trouble, Uno, Twister, Pictionary, etc.
Sleeping bag with camping trip

…

What my foster son really needs, the most nourishing gift we can give, is closeness, family bonding time, togetherness. Moments for us to create memories. Translation?

Family bonding and attachment opportunities!

Yes, he will get some toys and new clothing… But only in a measured amount. Let the abundance be family bonding time. After all, that is the best medicine to his emotionally starved self.
