GIVEAWAY: Hallmark Adoption Keepsake Ornaments

The keepsake ornaments you put on your Christmas tree can document memories for years to come. When I purchased my very first Christmas tree as an adult, I simply bought glass ornaments to make a pretty tree. But that changed one year, when I saw a flying pig ornament. I quickly purchased the ornament, and smiled inside when I placed it on my Christmas tree for the memory it brought to me.

That Christmas ornament was a flying pig. Its significance may make you smile a bit too. The back story on the flying pig isn’t about a wild ride on a Harley. You see, my college career was abruptly halted when I received a late night call that my dad was in ICU at the hospital back in Waco. The next morning, doctors gave me the horrifying news that cancer was eating away my dad’s brain and he would die within a six months. My dad died five months and three weeks later.

After a couple of years, I finally decided I was ready to go back to college. But without any support system, I was having to work more than part-time, and yet study enough to pass Biochemistry courses at Texas A&M University. Each month, I cried and worried if I could do it long enough to get that coveted college degree. 28 months later, when graduation day came, I wrote on my graduation cap “PIGS DO FLY!”

Flying pigs have become a special symbol to me that all things are possible! However, as I began adding flying pig ornaments and then other flying animals, my Christmas tree became overloaded with angel pigs, then angel sheep, then angel cows, angel dogs, and any winged animal — my friends began calling my Christmas tree “the dead animal tree.”

But once I married and became a mom through the miracle of adoption, the ornaments on our Christmas tree began to tell a different story – a magical story of hope, love and family memories.

Some of my favorite memories are told through the ornaments on our Christmas tree.

Celebrating Amazing Foster Dad of FIVE Little Ones

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #NauticaforDad #CollectiveBias

We became foster parents in 2008 and have fostered 16 kids during that time.  As parents of neglected and traumatized kids, our journey has not been easy one. In fact, we’ve had to learn our limits as parents, especially with the placements in the summer of 2012.

My husband was anxiously watching the calendar that school year. Every day that went by was one day closer to his ultimate goal in teaching — early retirement!  After teaching special education for the past decade, he was eager to relax at the end of his teaching career.

Not that life at home with our two boys was relaxing. Our 5-year-old forever son, placed with us as an 8-month-old, had been having all sorts of explosive behavior that he had been kicked out of THREE day cares.  We were struggling in parenting him, but then again, he’s only five, right? And parenting him with his 3-year-old brother, chaos is expected, right? We were living our normal with our two rambunctious preschoolers.

Suddenly, one day, I received a call asking if we would accept a placement.  The placement was a sibling group of THREE – but we only had TWO beds available in our home.  As the cloud of guilt overcame any clear thinking – I realized we only needed two beds because, get this – the baby doesn’t need a bed since she will sleep in a crib!

I immediately said “YES” because how heartless can you be to say no to a BABY, right?

foster-dad-kids-f2f

In the summer of 2012, our family looked like this: our 5-year-old forever son, 4-year-old foster son, 3-year-old forever son, nearly 2-year-old foster daughter (possibly FASD), and a 9-month-old foster baby!

While I was at my quiet desk job all day, Dad was at home with FIVE kids – 3 rambunctious, quibbling preschool boys, one very active non-verbal toddler, and a baby!

foster-dad-kids-swim-f2f

Welcome to retirement, Dad! So long to a relaxing summer enjoying retirement!

The stress of parenting five little ones all day alone was overwhelming for my husband (with a history of high blood pressure, no doubt).

Our 4-year-old foster son constantly fought with our 3-year-old son. Our 2-year-old sensory-seeking foster daughter was constantly into things and would scream at just the mention of sleep – she could only fall asleep with hard rocking motion.  And then there was the baby… That was along with our two forever sons.

But through that summer, I gained a new respect for my husband while parenting this herd of little ones. He is the anchor of our ever-changing family.

I also learned that I should discuss accepting foster care placements with my husband first.

And even years later, I’m still trying to make it up to him and like to treat him special on Father’s Day. With our recent move to the Austin area, I finally went and checked out the shopping at The Domain.

Since my special man likes to smell good, I went browsing at the Macy’s fragrance counter.

I discovered this deluxe gift set of the new Nautica LIFE.  It retails for $65 (even though it’s valued at $128.00). It includes a 3.4 oz Eau de Toilette, 2.5 oz Aftershave Balm, 2.5 oz Shower Gel, and 1 oz Eau de Toilette.

Love this new Nautica Life cologne. Great gift set.

You can celebrate your lifelong journey with the DAD in your life with new Nautica Life!

I have teamed up with Nautica fragrances via Collective Bias to host an amazing giveaway with 3 very easy ways to enter.
-One GRAND PRIZE winner will win a $4,000 cruise vacation package

NOTE: There is a happy ending to this story – the siblings were placed with a family member nearby. We run into the kids occasionally, and they seem well and happy.

My Christmas Wish: More Quiet Time at Home

Tracking PixelThis is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Cottonelle.

If you follow my family’s misadventures on Facebook, you know that last week was a chaotic nightmare.  I want just one morning or evening that’s QUIET!  But with two rambunctious, young boys, it’s beginning to feel that a quiet morning time is like sugarplums dancing in my head… Poof! An elusive dream.

quiet-time-quote-zig-ziglar

My 6-year-old ADHD son is impossible to wake in the mornings, even after going to bed at 7:30pm!  He’s close to a tantrum when he wakes up. I do know that low blood sugar can easily trigger my son into a rage anyway — so I’ve even woken him up with candy, just to spike his blood sugar up a bit so that he’s tolerable. Don’t judge!

Post by Foster2Forever.

School is now becoming a challenge. He tells me how much he hates school, and asks to stay home nearly everyday. I believe he is acting out so he can stay home.  I want to help my son express himself like the big kid he is, so our home can be less chaotic, and more of the calm environment I crave for my sons.

More calm. More quiet. More hugs. More laughter. More joy. MORE!

It’s simple – more is better. Having 25 percent more this holiday season can make a big impact.

Cottonelle-more-is-better

And Cottonelle understands that even just a little bit more is better and is giving away $100 American Express gift card EACH DAY until Friday, December 20th!  To enter, simply pin the Cottonelle image below to one of your Pinterest boards, and then fill out the form on the SITS Girls Facebook page. You can enter every single day this week! Easy peasy!

What do you want more of this Christmas? More time? More quiet? More calm?

It’s Chili Season in Texas

My 21-year-old son, Bubba, works the oddest hours and eats at weird times.  And he doesn’t eat much, many times just one meal a day. At 120 pounds, his 5’10” frame needs more food.  We began buying 6-packs of Wolf Brand Chili at Sam’s Club (for only $5.98), and Bubba eats it up! He just opens a can and heats it in the microwave. Easy, Peasy! The bonus is that Wolf Brand Chili has 32 grams of protein per can for Bubba.

Wolf Brand Chili is a Texas tradition – Texas football just isn’t right for me without Frito Pie, straight out of the bag! YUM! (Disclaimer: I am a born & bred Texan  — so a Coke is a soft drink, not a particular brand and Fritos are corn chips of any brand)

And with cooler fall weather, chili is just the perfect comfort food. You can eat chili straight up – or add a variety of toppings! I like Cheddar cheese and Fritos.

  • Texas apron {{very cute}}
  • 4 chili bowls
  • Set of coasters featuring the Wolf Brand Chili logo

To enter: Just leave a comment below telling me how you like to eat chili! (Facebook comments don’t count)
A winner will be randomly chosen.

Wolf Brand Chili is now thicker and heartier than ever, just the way that Texans like it! The new, thicker and heartier recipe can also be found every day on the shelves of your local grocery store.  This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Wolf Brand Chili.  For more information, visit the Wolf Brand Chili website or Wolf Brand Chili’s Facebook page.
